LOVE AND LIMITS:
Managing THE MELTDOWNS AND PROMOTING THE POSITIVE

with Rebecca Schrag HERSHBERG  - Via Zoom

Most parents of young children know a thing or two about tantrums--those epic meltdowns that seem to come out of nowhere. Even though tantrums can be part of"normal" early childhood behavior, they are maddening, stressful, and exhausting. What can parents do to help everyone step back and calm down? With candor and wit, Rebecca Schrag Hershberg, psychologist and mom of two, joins us to discuss the science behind why tantrums occur and what parents might unintentionally be doing to encourage them. She offers a customizable plan for nipping blowups in the bud while fostering healthy development and deeper parent-child connections. Imagine family life with equal measures of love and limits--and less drama.

Dr. Hershberg will lead a lively and practical conversation about effective approaches for promoting positive and prosocial behavior in toddlers and young children. She will focus on how to better understand the normative disruptive behaviors that emerge during this period, and will share strategies for managing tantrums, defiance and aggression in ways that foster children’s coping skills, frustration tolerance, and healthy social-emotional development.

The evening will focus on:

• Why your child's developing brain is hard wired for "big emotions."
• What you may be doing (unintentionally!) to encourage outbursts.
• Ways to use structure and routines to help your child feel secure.
• How to reduce tantrums at tough times of day, from wake-up to bedtime.
• Strategies for managing tantrums under difficult circumstances, from the holidays, to travel, to moving.
• Ways to deepen your parent–child connection--starting right now.

ABOUT:

Dr. Hershberg is a clinical psychologist and the founder of Little House Calls Psychological Services, a consultation and psychotherapy practice that specializes in helping kids and parents confront a range of common early childhood challenges. She is the former Director of Quality and Training for Healthy Steps at Montefiore, where she also taught both residents and medical students as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Hershberg has been published widely, including in the New York Times. She has been quoted extensively in both print and online media, and has been a featured guest on a variety of podcasts as well as on WAMC PublicRadio and Fox’s morning show, Good Day Wake Up.

Dr. Hershberg’s first book, The Tantrum Survival Guide: Tune In to Your Toddler’s Mind (and Your Own) to Calm the Craziness and Make Family Fun Again was published in October, 2018 by the Guilford Press. Endorsed by Dr. Alicia Lieberman (author of The Emotional Life of the Toddler) and with a forward by Dr. Dan Siegel (author of The Whole Brain Child), The Tantrum Survival Guide has been heralded as “an invaluable tool for living in the trenches with young kids” and “the toddler decoding manual you’ve been waiting for.” A native of New York City, Dr. Hershberg currently lives in lower Westchester County with her husband and two young sons, who both keep her busier – though also smiling! – more than any of the above.
