A Legal Workshop for Parents and Parents To Be

Come for an informative and animated discussion on various legal topics relevant to parents and parents to be. Lawyers Victoria Raikes, Samiya (Simi) Mir, and insurance expert Kellan Goldberg, will talk you through some important legal issues involved in parenting including choosing and documenting a guardian, what you should know about wills, trusts, estates and life insurance, laws you should be aware of when hiring a nanny, newborn care, and other household help, and your employment rights before, during, and after maternity or paternity leave.

Our speakers will address these difficult topics in an engaging and lively workshop aimed at clarifying what can feel like otherwise overwhelming information.

Topics discussed will include:

-  Setting up wills
-  Selecting guardians
-  Life insurance: which kind?
-  Coordinating Life Insurance with wills & trusts
-  Why every family needs a trust
-  Important information about employing nannies, sitters, domestic help, and newborn care helpers.
-  Domestic worker laws
-  Maternity/paternity leave- what are your rights?

Victoria Raikes:
Victoria assists individuals and families with their wills, trusts and estate planning needs.  She and her partner Ashley Kirkham are fellow HRP Mamas (five boys between them!), and pride themselves on their accessibility and affordability for young families creating their estate plan.  They focus their practice solely on estate planning, and consider careful planning to be a tribute to a life well-lived.

Victoria is a graduate of New York University School of Law, J.D. '99.  She earned her bachelor's degree from Amherst College.  Prior to forming Kirkham Raikes PLLC with her partner Ashley, she worked as a commercial litigator at large midtown law firms, including Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, and Greenberg Traurig LLP.

Samiya Mir:
Samiya (Simi) Mir handles a wide variety of cases in the areas of employment law, commercial and civil litigation, and business law.  Her practice includes counseling both U.S. and multinational businesses, entrepreneurs, and individuals on a wide variety of matters including   litigation, employment, Department of Labor audits, corporate compliance, contract negotiation, and copyright and licensing.  Ms. Mir's firm also specializes in Immigration Law, practiced by her partner David Katona.
Ms. Mir earned her bachelor's degree in political science at Colgate University and graduated cum laude from American University, Washington College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, she served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Vanessa Ruiz, D.C. Court of Appeals. Simi worked at the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson from 2001 to 2004, where she practiced trial and appellate litigation and represented businesses and individuals on cases involving securities, white collar crime, and breach of contract.  She also served as a staff attorney at The Legal Aid Society, Criminal Defense Division.  Ms. Mir serves as an adjunct professor of law at Fordham University Law School and taught contracts and business law in Milan, Italy from 2002-2004.

Kellan Goldberg:
Kellan Goldberg is the President and Owner of Eleven Eleven Advisors. She has been in the financial services industry since 2008. Prior to opening her own firm, she worked at two boutique firms, developing their insurance departments, and has specialized in working with young, growing families.
Kellan started her own firm to provide a higher level of client service and much needed transparency and education in the insurance industry. She helps clients coordinate their insurance and estate planning needs through a network of professionals and experts. She has been an advocate of education throughout her career through a variety of speaking engagements and published articles. Kellan graduated from the University of Maryland with a BS in business administration.
